A MING BLUE AND WHITE BALUSTER JAR, guan, painted with a continuos garden scene at the centre between lappets around the shoulder and foot, depicting a scholar engaged in a variety of pursuits, variously seated under pine, an attendant helping him put his boots on, greeting a figure with a pen in his hand before a scroll painting nearby writing a poem, washing his hand in a tripod basin, an assistant by his side and a large crane to the other, bidding farewell, seated playing a qin before an incense burner and scholar, greeting a frienf before a running dog, he sits with two others playing weiqi, gesticulating at the total eclipse of the sun above, finally appearing at a massive pagoda-shaped censer on cabriole legs before a pavilon, the central band between twelve central dot lappets and key-pattern around the foot and ten cloud collar lappets painted with phoenixes amnd dividing pendent jewels at the shoulder, below stylised cloud or lingzhi scrolls reserved on a dense diaper ground around the slightly flaring neck (firing cracks to shoulder), circa 1480 36cm. high
