As with many of Carpeaux's figures - both terracotta and bronze, this bust is inspired by the face of Anna Foucart who he first met in 1860 when she was fourteen years old; some years later he hoped to marry her, although her father would not allow it. The plaster original of "La Rieuse" is signed and dated on the left shoulder J.B. Carpeaux, 1872; this terracotta example dates from 1874.
