The gourd is a Daoist symbol of immortality and longevity, a subject particularly popular during the Jiajing period due to the Emperor's devotion to Daoism.

A very similar Jiajing-marked vase, but of slightly larger size (45.1cm.), is illustrated in Zhongguo taoci quanji, vol. 21, Jingdezhen caihui ciqi, Shanghai, 1981, no. 28.
