Francesco Xanto Avelli used contemporary engravings, most often those of Marcantonio Raimondi and his school, as inspiration for his subjects, drawing on a vocabulary of figures which he used repeatedly in his compositions, often taking figures from different engravings for one painting.

Four engravings have been identified as sources for this composition. The figure to the right is taken from a figure on the righthand side of an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi, 'David Cutting off the head of Goliath', after Raphael (Bartsch, vol. XIV, no. 10), whilst the figure of St. Ursula is taken from the engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi of St. Cecilia (Bartsch, vol. XIV, no. 177). Two of the maidens are taken from the same series of engravings of saints also by this hand; the figure to the far right side in the boat closely ressembling that of St. Catherine (Bartsch, vol. XIV, no. 175) and the figure to her right is very similar to St. Apollonia (Bartsch, vol. XIV, no. 173)
