Apparently part of a Biblical series derived from Hans von Sebald Beham's Biblisch Historien, Frankfurt 1533, the inspiration for an extensive series of dishes with Biblical subjects, see Jorg Rasmussen, Italiensche Majolika, p. 192. Stylistically the painting on the present dish closely resembles that on the series of Punic War dishes, see Timothy Wilson, Ceramic Art of the Italian Renaissance, no. 209
