The present marble figure is indirectly inspired by an antique original which was known in numerous examples from at least the sixteenth century. Although these examples are known to exhibit significant variations of detail, the present marble appears to depend on the model created by Giambologna in the mid-1560's, itself an interpretation of the antique composition.
