Al-Muwatta is the oldest surviving corpus of Muslim law. The monumental work was pivotal in the Maghreb and Andalusia. Even in the present day it prevails in North Africa and Eastern Arabia. The collator, Yahya b. Yahya, was a student of Malik b. Anus in Baghdad, from whom he gained the epithet, 'the wise man of Andalus', due to his uninterrupted concentration on his work. Yahya b. Yahya was also the man responsible for the introduction of the Maliki rite into al-Andalus.

The present copy appears from the marginal notes to be the draft working copy of an editor
