A hitherto unrecorded version of the composition already known in two versions, in the Prado, Madrid (167 x 110cm.; D. Angulo Iñiguez and A. E. Pérez Sánchez, Historia de la Pintura Española: Escuela Toledana de la primera Mitad del Siglo XVII, Madrid, 1972, p.172, no.164, and pl.134) and in the collection of the Marqués de Saltillo, Madrid, before 1936 (signed; 115 x 96cm.; ibid., no.165 and pl.133). The present picture corresponds with that in the Prado with minor variations, notably the inclusion of the plant at lower left absent from the Prado painting but included, in different form, in that formerly in the Saltillo Collection
