One of several versions of this composition known to exist. Van Loo's Portrait of Philip V in the Prado, no. 1.865 and that at Versailles, no. MV 4378, have both been considered prototypes for the group. The present lot follows most closely the latter, where the sitter is depicted holding his baton with his hand at shoulder height, rather than the lowered position of his hand in the Prado picture
