With its pair le Baiser rendu, le Baiser Donné was originally commissioned by the Duc de Chârtres circa 1774-8 and is traditionally ascribed to Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828). A related pair of bronze reductions in the Wallace Collection (s.217 and 218) is illustrated in J. G. Mann, Wallace Collection Catalogue, Sculpture, London, 1931, pl.54.
