This provenance is taken from a letter written by Lars G. Ekmaretz on 24 February 1937 and attested by two members of the Svenska Handelsbanken in Stockholm.
The decoration of this bureau combines elements from a number of signed pieces by Georg Haupt (1741-1784), court cabinetmaker to King Adolphus Fredrik (1710-1771) and his successor Gustav III (1771-1792). A secretaire with very similarly-decorated flap with inset ribbon-tied medallion hung with laurel swags with geometrical borders is in the Werner Collection, Göteborg and illustrated in M. Lagerquist, Georg Haupt Ebéniste du Roi, Stockholm, 1979, p.156, no.36. The ribbon-twist ormolu mount inside a recessed panel, the escutcheons and handles appear frequently on other Haupt pieces. The decoration of the two drawers sans traverse is very close to that on a series of commodes two of which are dated 1780 (see Lagerquist, op.cit., pp.176-181, nos.50, 51, 52 and 53). A secretaire with identical feet and similar base section is illustrated Lagerquist, op.cit., p.222, no.80.
