Presumably the picture recorded in Lord Napier's collection at Wilton Lodge, Roxburgh, in 1798 (Musgrave, Add. MSS 6392, f. 117v: 'Lady Henrietta Hope...'). Col. Ralph Hope-Vere, Blackwood, Lanarkshire; Christie's, 21 December 1928, lot 164, as by Allan Ramsay (400gns. to Leggatt).

The identifying inscription on this portrait appears to be inaccurate as Henrietta Hope-Vere's parents did not marry until 1733 (see previous lot). The sitter is more likely to be Lady Henrietta Hope, second daughter of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun, by his wife Lady Henrietta Johnstone, only daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale. Lady Henrietta married, in 1729, Francis Napier, 6th Baron Napier (1705-1773).
