King Ludwig II of Bavaria comissioned the reproduction of the original 18th Century model. Following a visit to Versailles in 1867, he hallowed his namesake and ancestor, Louis XIV, the Sun King, in the decoration of his villas Schloss Lindershof and Herrenchiemsee. Apollo driving the Sun chariot was painted in the state bed alcove at both residences and, at the latter, the painting originally bore Ludwig's face. Here, an adjoining room was named the Meissen cabinet. In this group, the sun and hunter god is seated in glory, whilst Love bears sun-discs reflecting divine wisdom. Cf.
