A label on the reverse of this miniature reads "Grandpapa Theweneti". An oil painting of Michael Theweneti by his brother Lorenzo was exhibited in the "Exhibition of Works by Old Bath Artists" held at the Victoria Art Gallery of the Corporation of Bath in Spring 1903, no. 58, lent by Miss Theweneti but there is no reproduction with which to compare the sitters. It is probable that the label indicates the work was painted by the owner's grandfather rather than that the work is a picture of the owner's grandfather. Foskett gives Lorenzo's birth date to c. 1797 and Edward's another brother, as 1806 and presuming that Michael was born near to these dates, the sitter in this miniature appears too old for the work to be a self-portrait.
