Gould remarked that this pheasant with large red facial wattles, long tail, and finely pencilled plumage over the whole upper body surface was similar to the Silver Pheasant, although it differed in that its legs were bluish grey instead of bright red.
Joseph Wolf had earlier in 1867 illustrated living birds at the Zoological Society for the publication Zoological Sketches. The Lineated Pheasants were introduced into England in 1864, and later bred frequently at Regent's Park.
The male and female are depicted three-quarters lifesize.

DISTRIBUTION: Himalayas of southern Asia from the Indus river to northeastern Assam, southward to Burma and western Thailand.
The birds depicted represent the subspecies Lophura leucomelanos lineata, the Lineated Kalij, which occurs in southern Burma, northern Tenasserim and northwestern Thailand
