King Frederik V of Denmark and his mother Queen Sophia Magdalene: he, facing right, in armour, wearing the sash and star of the Order of the Elephant; she, full face, in embroidered white dress with jewelled border, ermine lined crimson robe, wearing a Royal Household decoration
on card, the latter inscribed on the reverse and dated 1740, gilt-metal mounts with coronet cresting (one deficient)

Frederik V (1723-1766) was the only son of Christian VI, King of Denmark and Norway and his wife Sophia Magdalene, 4th daughter of Christian Heinrich, Margrave of Brandebburg-Culmbach. He married Louisa, (1724-1751) youngest daughter of George II, King of Great Britain in 1743 and secondly after her death Juliana Maria (1729-1796), youngest daughter of Ferdinand Albert II, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenblüttel. He was succeeded on his death by his eldest son from his first marrriage Christian VII
