The painting of miniatures at this date directly onto a lapis lazuli surface is unusual but not unknown. In the above case the technique and style is reminiscent of the Low Countries, and it is possible that these portraits of Charles I and Henrietta Maria were painted circa 1651-1661 during the exile of Henrietta Maria
and Prince Charles
