Flight Sergeant Nelson Leftly died on 8.4.1942, while serving as an Observer in a Wellington of No. 405 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron - his Pilot was compelled to make a forced landing on a beach after returning from a raid on Hamburg. Leftly, who was 28 years old, is buried in Great Bircham (St. Mary) Churchyard, Norfolk. Tragically, his brother, Emerson, was also killed on operations, in November 1941, while serving as a Sergeant in 102 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
