Designed in the Louis XIV arabesque manner, this ebony sarcophagus-shaped pedestal is inlaid with Boulle tablets of acanthus-entwined ribbon-scrolls and embellished with bacchic satyr-masks emerging from acanthus-wrapped volutes on lion monopodia. A pair of identical stands stamped by Etienne Levasseur (maître in 1767), who specialised in the restoration of Louis XIV Boulle furniture, was sold anonymously in these Rooms on the 14 June 1990, lot 44. A further related pair, although with different feet, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's Monaco, 23 June 1991, lot 568
