This is one of six known versions by Cozens of this famous view from Greenwich Hill. One other is dated, 1791 (C.F. Bell and T. Girtin, The Drawings and Sketches of John Robert Cozens: A Catalogue with an Historical Introduction, Walpole Society, XXIII, 1934-5, p.80 no.441 I): this was sold in these Rooms on 7 March 1972, lot 78, illustrated. Bell and Girtin also list a version in the collection of Mrs. Arthur Clifton (op.cit., no.441 II), and Bell adds a third in the Wingfield collection (C.F. Bell, Some Additions and Notes to the Twenty-third Volume of the Walpole Society, [1947], no.441 III); this was sold at Sotheby's, 18 March 1982, lot 172, illustrated in colour. Further examples are in the Courtauld Institute, Spooner Bequest (illustrated Hawcroft, op.cit, no.94) and in the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection (illustrated Wilton, op.cit., pl.56).
