The textile would likely have decorated an altar before the image of Krishna. Compare to a similarly decorated pichhavai illustrated in R. Skelton, Rajasthani Temple Hangings of the Krishna Cult, 1973, pl.2, where the author notes that the shower of blossoms relates to the monsoon season and suggests that these hangings may have been used for the popular festival Janmashtami.
