Bianco di Faenza was first produced in the 1540s. It was a great success and soon became the town's most important production. It was based on the exceptionally high quality of the tin glaze. The white ground was painted in the characteristical a compendiario style, a sketchy style in a palette dominated by hues of blue and ochre. One of the most important Faenza potters, who played a leading role in developing this new production, was Virgiolotto Calamelli.
The Bianco di Faenza maiolica was also highly successful outside of Italy, and were ordered by German and Austrian families.
Because of its popularity, the a compendiario style was copied by various other production centres.

Please note that the coat of arms on these tazze are from Johann Anton Fürst von Eggenberg and Anna Maria Princess von Brandenburg-Bayreuth, who where married in 1639, and therefor these tazze can be dated circa 1639.
