Margaret Bourke-White came to the attention of picture editors and the American public when she started photographing steelworks in 1928. At the Otis steel mill in Ohio she began producing the intensely dramatic pictures which were to establish her as a talented and individual photographer. The fact that a woman was responsible for these pictures appealed to the press and the resulting attention and commissions effectively launched her career as a photographer.
