Unusually the cotton is found not in white but in the light blue. It changes to a darker blue wool for half of the carpet. There appears to be only one other Afshar rug with this feature, a smaller example in the Jack Corwin Collection ('Nadir's Legacy', HALI 53 October 1990, p.246). The present carpet, although of far larger format, shares the same form both of the large and the small boteh together with both borders. The form of the large boteh is also identical to those of the 'grandfather' of the group, the Hartley Clark Afshar rug sold in these Rooms 16 April 1984, lot 18, and exhibited in The Qashqa'i of Iran, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 1976, no.H18, p.81 and col pl.7.
