PRE-STAMP POSTMARKS OF HUNGARY Being part of the Austrian Empire, these postmarks are of equal interest to Hungarian as well as Austrian stamp collectors. Although nearly 300 Post Offices are recorded at the start of the pre-stamp period in 1751, only a fraction were in existence in the less developed parts of Hungary. The first Hungarian town postmark recorded is 13th. April 1752 and all 18th. Century markings are scarce. The study of these postmarks is fully covered, thanks to excellent works by B. Térfi and E. Müller which were updated in a new catalogue "Handbook of the Hungarian pre-stamp mail" by Ber, Makkai and Suranyi in 1990 (hereinafter HHPS). The point values given are from Müller or if not, recorded in Müller from HHPS. The lotting is in alphabetical order of place names. Whatever the reason for collecting pre-stamp markings, due to the variety of the markings and the changes in their form as well as the complicated postal rates, it is important to carefully study the available literature on the subject. This we strongly recommend to our clients.
