A FINE MAMLUK SILVER AND GOLD INLAID CANDLESTICK BASE IN THE NAME OF SULTAN SHIHAB AL-DUNYA AL-DIN AHMAD B. AL-MALIK AL-NASIR MUHAMMAD (reigned 1342 AD), of slightly curving truncated conical form with angled and slightly sunken shoulder, the sides with a broad band of scrolling leafy vine overlaid by cusped roundels each containing palmette vine around a circular blazon inscribed on the central band "al-Sultan al-Malik al-Nasir Ahmad", the roundels linked by a band of extremely elegant Mamluk thuluth containing the various titles of the sultan, each panel of inscription flanked above and below by bird roundels, the broad central band of decoration flanked above and below by raised triangular motif bands, meandering vine bands and reciprocal bird bands, the angle of the shoulder with a band of titles interrupted by roundels, the main shoulder band comprising cusped bird roundels alternating with similar palmette roundels and divided by smaller rosettes, the neck and mouth deficient, mid 14th century (shoulder rubbed, inscriptions and borders now lacking inlay, most silver inlay on leaves and birds still surviving)8½in. The main inscription reads:
''izz li-mawlana al-sultan al-malik al-nasir al-'alim al-'amil al-'adil al-'arif al-mujahid al-murabit al-muthaghir al-mu'ayyad Shihab al-Dunya w'al-Din Ahmad ibn al-Malik al-nasir Muhammad' (Glory to our Lord the Sultan, the King, the victorious, the wise, the diligent, the just, the learned, warrior of the Faith, defender, guardian of the frontiers, strengthened by God, Shihab al-Dunya w'al-Din Ahmad son of al-Malik al-Nasir Muhammad).

Three of the blazons are inscribed: 'al-Sultan al-Malik Ahmad'. The fourth blazon, originally identical, has been re-engraved with a waqf (endowment) in favour of the tomb of Shaykh Ahmad ibn 'Alwan ibn Muhammad al-Buni.

Al-Malik al-Nasir Ahmad, fourth of the nine sons of Malik al-Nasir Muhammad, ruled only for a few months during the year 1342. Apart from the present piece, three other published brasses bear dedicatory inscriptions to him:
