DESIGN FOR A MEDAL, CAST IN 1806 BY ANDRIEU L. BRAMSEN MéDAILLER NAPOLéON LE GRAND .... PENDANT LE CONSULAT ET L'EMPIRE, COPENHAGEN, 1909, NO. 213. DESCRIBED AS 'FRANCE BRANDISHING THE LOOKING GLASS OF PROVIDENCE, HOLDS THE HAND OF AFFLICTED RELIGION SEATED BESIDE A CHURCH IN RUINS. IN THE BACKGROUND IS NOTRE-DAME IN PARIS.' THE MEDAL IS 50MM. IN DIAMETER AND CELEBRATES THE SIGNATURE OF THE TREATY BETWEEN ROME AND FRANCE ON 8 APRIL 1802 (18 GERMINAL AN IX) WHICH REESTABLISHED THE PUBLIC WORSHIP OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH. BERTRAND ANDRIEU (1761-1822) WAS THE MOST FAMOUS MEDALLIST OF HIS TIME. IN 1800, HIS FRIEND BARON DOMINIQUE VIVANT DENON INITIATED A SERIES OF PRINTS CELEBRATING THE SUCCESSFUL RULE OF NAPOLEON BUONAPARTE.
