A similar vase painted with two of the Daoist Stellar gods is illustrated by Rose Kerr, Chinese Ceramics, Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, London, 1986, p. 59, pl. 35. An inscription on that vase dates the piece to 1708. There is a strong likelihood that the present lot, which is similar in shape and Daoist subject matter, dates to the same period. However, this robust swelling form continues on into the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor and can be found painted in famille rose enamels. See Kangxi-Yongzheng-Qianlong, Qing Porcelain from the Palace Museum Collection, Beijing, 1989, p. 214, pl. 43
