A MARBLE AND HONGMU TABLE SCREEN, XIAOZUOPINGFENG
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The rectangular "dreamstone" with pale gray inclusions flecked with darker spots and ochre streaks, all silhouetted on the creamy white ground and suggesting the piled rocks of a vertiginous mountain range, the hongmu frame removable from the stand formed by two stepped feet carved with lappet bands and surmounted by vertical stiles carved as baluster vases with low-relief decoration flanked by openwork brackets carved as writhing dragons, the stiles and feet joined by an apron carved with squared meander below a similarly carved lower panel--28in. (71.1cm.) high, 28¾in. (73cm.) wide, 11½in. (29.2cm.) deep
