AN IMPORTANT SPANISH COLONIAL GOLD TAZZA AND PAIR OF ALTAR CRUETS
ALTO PERU (BOLIVIA), CIRCA 1680
Of circular form on spreading foot chased and repoussé with a band of lobes and flat-chased above with a band of stylized acanthus and scrolls, the field chased with an outer border of overlapping husks enclosing three circular depressions (bell lacking) each chased and engraved with a star-burst pattern, alternating with three circular cartouches chased with the Papal crown and crossed keys, a Cardinal's hat and a Bishop's mitre respectively, all on a ground flat-chased with a continuous pattern of foliate scrolls on a matted ground, the raised central boss chased with a band of spiral acanthus leaves enclosing a circular cartouche engraved with a cross above D DJn PABLo DE OLMEDO above a flower and wreath--9in.(22.8cm.) diameter; the cruets each with globular bodies on spreading feet flat-chased with foliate scroll and spiral acanthus bands, the lower part of the bodies applied with vertical palmettes, the upper parts applied each with three cast openwork foliate scroll handles and with foliate chased scroll spouts, the hinged quatrofoil covers with similar decoration, applied with pierced circles with A and V respectively--4 1/4in.(10.9cm.) high
