Each of typical form, with scalloped border chased with leaves and flowerheads on a matted ground below a band of acanthus, the footrest with applied trelliswork in an oval cartouche, chased above with panels of foliage in two color gold, similar panels on base of stirrup, engraved on foot with initials G.M.S., marked on overhead--5 1/8in.(13cm.) high

The initials are said to be those of General Santos, President of the Republic of Uruguay.

Torricella, an emigrant to Uruguay from Venice, was, together with Bellini, the official goldsmith to President Santos. These stirrups probably date from 1882, when Santos assumed the Presidency.
