Although not signed, according to family sources, this fancy intense yellow diamond ring was designed by Paul Flato, known for his original creations in the 1930s and early 40's. This ring is characteristic of Flato's style, with its large fancy-shaped diamond counterbalanced by a double row of white diamonds on the shank. At the time, Flato was known for the large gemstone jewelry he promoted in a rather avant-garde manner, lending his jewels to prominent stage and screen stars to wear to events where they might catch the eye of potential purchasers. Such notables as Lily Pons wore a $100,000 necklace to a San Francisco opera premier and, on another occasion, the model, Lucy Saunders, wore a 55-carat champagne diamond ring. The Philadelphia Inquirer in June of 1943 called his new trend towards larger gemstones, "style-in-stones."
