John B. Flannagan is known primarily for his work as a sculptor. In that medium, he produced some of the most outstanding examples of American directly carved sculptures. His close association with the works of artists such as William Zorach, had a lasting influence on his style. It is interesting to note that both William Zorach and his wife Marguerite produced linocuts. They no doubt enjoyed, as Flannagan must have, the physical relationship between directly carving a sculpture and carving a printing block.
