AN ETRUSCAN BLACK-FIGURE NECK-AMPHORA

Depicting Achilles' ambush of Triolos, one side with the fully armed Achle (the Etruscan Achilles) hiding behind a fountain, rectangular building with lion head spout surmounted by up-right branches with a small bird flying to the left and a standing bird-headed monster armed with a dagger, the other side with a young nude boy, a branch in his left hand, leading two horses, the nearer one ridden by Triolos (here a bearded man, contrary to Greek versions), a crop in his right hand, reins in his left, and behind the horses, an armed woman with a spear and quiver, lotus and palmette on the neck, rays on the feet, misfired, repaired from large fragments with minor restoration and glaze loss, 14 3/16in. (36cm.) high
