Château Pêtrus--Vintage 1961
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel.
Top-shoulder level and pristine label in first lot; magnum with high-to-top-shoulder level and bin-soiled label; both with deep color "Leaving aside that this is one of the most excessively priced stars of the international saleroom, a pretty good mouthful of wine. 'Rich' in well over a dozen notes since 1967; 'black as Egypt's night', even after 18 years in bottle: magnificently opulent on nose and palate. From then on: appearance consistently deep and velvety though now showing signs of maturing; a bouquet that defies description, 'rich ripe mulberry Merlot' noted regulary, also, after time in the glass, scented, spicy, vegetal, wholemeal, and then sort of tarry cinnamon. Very sweet, immensely full-bodied, firm yet fleshy, velvety, with high extract masking tannin, lovely texture, slighlty chocolatly, crammed with fruit. Worth every penny. Five stars. Magnificent now, and no end in sight." JMB
