A TANAKA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), WITH KAO

The rectangular, iron plate in hamadashi size for a tanto mounting is four-lobed, round-cornered and has a raised and rounded rim and edge. The surface is carved and hammered in a stone finish. The edge is carved with a tortoise-shell pattern. On the reverse a kao is carved to the lower left of the central opening--height 5.2cm., width 4.0cm., thickness 5.25mm.

The style of the kao and the characteristic surface treatment indicate that this tsuba is the work of one of the artists of the Tanaka school.
