A TANAKA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED KAGETOSHI WITH KAO
The thin iron plate is of slightly indented, rectangular shape with a delicately raised rim. The inner raised rim area has an edge of silver nunome snow pattern. The web is carved with rain lines and is inlaid with a relief sea turtle (minogame) in silver on a rock by a gold plum tree. Above are gold leaves blown in the wind and rain. The reverse is decorated with a fierce rain storm, and a pine tree partly obscured by the carved lines of the wind and rain. The tree has gold accents. The face is signed, and the kao of this artist is on the reverse to the upper right of the seppa-dai. The hitsu-ana has a wide gold sekigane inset. The lower copper plug in the central opening is now missing--height 7.0cm., width 6.2cm., thickness 2.25mm.
