AN UCHIKOSHI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800), SIGNED MASAYOSHI WITH KAO
The oval brass plate tsuba has a polished surface. It is deeply carved with a rock cave entrance and a hawk in shakudo and gold accents. The reverse is decorated with the cave opening, cut from the front, and a bear with its paws over its head, hiding in the cave. The bear is inlaid in shakudo and copper. The kozuka hitsu-ana is plugged with shakudo--height 6.1cm., width 5.8cm., thickness 5.0mm.
