A YOKOYA SCHOOL KOZUKA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1875), SIGNED ICHO GA SOYO WITH KAO

The polished shibuichi plate is carved in brushstroke style (katakiribori) with the design of the Sojo under an enormous sake cup that they are using as an umbrella. The carving covers the edges as well. The reverse has rain-style file marks--length 9.6cm., width 1.4cm., thickness 4.5mm.

This is the work of the Soyo who also signed Tomoyoshi. He was not of the direct line of the Yokoya family school and did not succeed to the title. The inscription Itcho ga refers to the famous painter Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724), from whom Soyo took his design.
