A YOKOYA SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1775), SIGNED SOYO WITH KAO

The oval, polished, shibuichi plate is carved in brushstroke style (katakiribori). The design is of a tiger by a large bamboo tree trunk. The reverse is decorated with another tiger and a few bamboo leaves--height 6.3cm., width 5.9cm., thickness 4.5mm.

The second generation master of the Yokoya school to sign Soyo was the third master of the family school. He was the adopted son of Somin I (1670-1733). There is another artist who signed Soyo (fl. 1875) whose is often mistaken for this artist.
