A GOTO STYLE TSUBA

The round, four-lobed nigurome plate has a nanako rim and edge. The web is carved in an openwork design and inlaid front and back with flush gold chrysanthemum blooms, landscape scenes and geometric patterns, and poem cards--height 7.5cm., width 6.9cm., thickness 4.0mm.

This tsuba exemplifies the last stage, and the best work, of the Nagoya mono style. At this time the craftsmen, proficient in many styles, were more strongly influenced by trends in Edo, rather than by those of Kyoto.
