A HIRATA STYLE TSUBA
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1575), INSCRIBED DONIN WITH KAO

The shakudo plate is formed as a double wisteria bloom crest (fuji mon) with flower buds in gold wire outline. The leaves have flush copper inlay in linear decoration. Insects in relief with gold wire outline and cloisonné of clear glass (shippo) are a later application to the plate--height 6.8cm., width 6.4cm., thickness 3.5mm.

This tsuba is a very fine classic example of the early Kaga school. The cloisonné decoration was attached in the Edo period at the time the signature was added.
