A RARE IYO SHOAMI TSUBA
MID-EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1750), SIGNED YOSHU MATSUYAMA JU SHOAMI HIDETSUGU (SHOAMI HIDETSUGU [Fl. CIRCA 1750])

The four-lobed mokko form copper plate has heart-shaped (inome-bori) openings at the indentations. The plate surface is worked and hammered to effect a stone (ishime) ground on each side. The kogai shape apertures are plugged with lead--height 8.2cm., width 7.8cm., thickness 5.1mm.

The Iyo Shoami school worked at Matsuyama for the Hisamatsu daimyo of Iyo Province, Shikoku, from circa 1650 until circa 1775. Hidetsugu was a master of the later group of artists of this school which included Hideyasu and Hidemitsu.
