A HIGO STYLE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700)

The round iron plate is pierced on either side of the central opening with large, fan-shaped apertures. The surface has some hammer marks and the edge has many fine iron bones--height and width 7.7cm., thickness 4.0mm.

This design became popular with various Higo schools in the early Edo period and was used until the Meiji era (circa 1600-1870).
