A fragment of an old relining canvas attached to the stretcher reads 'Tableau original/du TINTORET./du Cabinet de M. le Duc de TALLARD' and in another hand 'no. 8'.

Hans Tieze, in a certificate dated New York 1952, which accompanies this lot, states that it is a work by Jacopo Tintoretto and dates it to the early 1560s
