An old label removed from the stretcher read 'Portrait de Jean van Male, qui épousa le 4 Juin 1637, Josine de But, fille d'Armand et Josine de But, petite fille de Guillaume échevin de Bruges né en 1570 et de Livia Breydel arrière petite fille de Gauillaume aussi échevin de Bruges et d'Ag... de Mett... gand qu'il épousa en 1569' (Gelder, op. cit., p. ) .

De Gelder (loc. cit.) records the present lot as signed and dated 'B.vander.helst/1654'. According to the Metropolitan Museum notes (June 22, 1937) this was removed during clearning, and had been painted on top of an old damage.

C. Hofstede de Groot (verbal communciation, Sept. 2, 1908, Metropolitan Museum of Art files) confirmed the attribution to van der Helst. Horst Gerson (verbal communication, April 1939, Metrpolitan Museum of Art file) noted that van Male is a Flemish name, and the artist might also be Flemish
