Gaugengigl was born in Passau, Bavaria, he studied in Munich and travelled throughout Italy and France before coming to Boston in 1880. He exhibited frequently at the Boston Art Club. A self-portrait of the artist in a similar studio setting is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
