Carpeaux's second year project at the Rome Academy, Jeune pêcheur à la coquille was inspired by the previous works of his teachers François Rude and Francisque Duret as well as his studies in Rome and visit to Naples. Executed in 1857, Carpeaux exhibited the plaster in 1858 and the bronze won a second class medal in the Salon of 1859. A marble version was acquired by the Empress Eugènie after being exhibited at the Salon of 1860.
