Signac passed three consecutive summers, from 1882 to 1884, at Port-en-Bassin on the Normandy coast. At that time he still painted in an Impressionist manner, influenced especially by Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Guillaumin. The summer of 1884 was an important period for the painter because he met Georges Seurat in June of that year; Seurat and pointillism were soon to become dominant influences on his art. The present painting is among his last Impressionist canvases.

According to Françoise Cachin, the artist numbered this painting Opus 71. This painting will be included in her forthcoming Signac catalogue raisonné.
