Jaques was born in Ohio and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, but was mainly self-taught. Her strong interest in botany led her to printmaking and making over one thousand cyanotypes of endangered plants species. She organized the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1910 and entered her work in several international salons and expositions.
